Ransom my heart – Meg Cabot

Posted on July 21st, 2009 in Love and other adventures, Medieval mayhem by Maree

Finn Crais is the resourceful daughter of a miller living in Stephensgate, England, in 1291.

When Finns older sister, Mellana, gets pregnant by a troubadour and has no money for a dowry, Finn agrees to carry out Mellanas ridiculous plan to abduct a wealthy man and hold him ransom, settling on Earl Hugh Fitzstephen, fresh back from the crusades and loaded with gold and jewels.

Finn doesn’t realize who it is she’s captured, and Fitzstephen, owing to a curiosity about Finn and wanting to see where the kidnapping will lead, plays along. As to be expected, passions become enflamed, and Finn discovers her sister’s plan may not be a simple as she originally thought.

In England in the year 1291, Finulla Crass, the adventurous daughter of the village miller, is determined to help her older sister, Mellana. The sisters come up with a rather unconventional plan – Finnula will find a wealthy man, kidnap him, and hold him for ransom in order to obtain the money Mellana needs. Finnula decides her captive will be a young earl, Hugo Fitzstephan, who has returned from the Crusades with quite a large fortune.

Hugo Fitzstephan is nothing like Finnula expected, however. The young knight is disturbingly handsome, and Finnula, who prefers hunting and riding to household tasks and is determined to never marry again after her first husband died before their wedding night, finds herself fighting her attraction for Hugo. Meanwhile, Hugo could escape at any time, but plays along as Finnula’s “hostage” because he is curious about – and rather fascinated by – this unconventional young woman.

Ransom My Heart is an enjoyable and lighthearted Medieval romance with an entertaining relationship between the main characters. It’s not super heavy on historical detail, but I loved that it was different from most romances set in this time period, in that it had a unique storyline and featured a heroine who was a commoner rather than the typical sheltered young noblewoman. This book does have a bit more mature content than Meg Cabot’s young adult books, however, so I wouldn’t really recommend it to her younger fans. Historical romance readers are sure to enjoy this book, and I highly recommend it to them.

    Heyy

WOW ransom my heart. What a beautiful but hard core novel. Ransom my heart is written by Meg Cabot, however if you have read the Princess Diaries series then you will know that Ransom my heart was the romance novel Princess Mia wrote for her senior project.

Ransom my heart is a story set back in the 13th century and it is based upon a girl named Finnula Crais. Finnula Crais isn’t your usual serf girl. Her family owns the towns mill and since her parents died her big brother Robert looks after Finnula and her older sisters. Finnula is a tomboy and has a fantastic ability with a bow and arrow. Finnula is also a beautiful fiery red-head who while wearing mens clothes and playing mens games is a young girl at heart who would do anything for her family. THis is put to the test when her older sister Mellena is in a crisis and needs Finn’s help. To help her sister Finn kidnappes and takes hostage a knight who names himself Hugh Fitzpatrick. The two become close and Hugh is happy to be a beautiful ladies hostage. What Finn doesn’t realize us that Hugh is actually Hugo Fitzstephen the village Earl. Hugo is entrigued by Finnula and her strange ways and soon the two fall in love.

Ransom my heart is a gorgeous book that is fantasticly written, truly capturing the old english language and ways. It is however quite adulty in some parts so i wouldn’t reccommend it to anyone below the age of 13. It’s a great book with some great one-liners and a touch of history, with handsome men and beautiful ladies. I reccomend the book to anyone who loves medieval history and/or Meg cabot books!!

Finnula Crais is head strong, and vicious for a girl in her time. She wears pants, to the villages disdain, and she rebels against the rules, using her skills as the best archer in the town, she poaches meat for the people who are starved. When her older sister falls pregnant out of wedlock, she promises to use her skills to kidnap a man for ransom, so she can redeem her wedding money.
She finds a man returning from the battles, and seduces him into her captivity.
Hugh, the returning Earl of the areas, is happy to be kidnapped by someone so beautiful and contently follows. His words infuriate her, but his touch melts her, and it is not long until they succumb to each other.
Many a terrible accusation, a horrific sword fight and a fatal wound occur, before Finnula and Hugh, admit to their love for each other.
Meg Cabot successfully takes the reader to times of horses, beautiful gowns, and really hot guys returning from battle. Great read!
